Peter Richards has been working and living in New York City since 1982. He is mostly known as a videographer of contemporary dance performances, but had a long and diverse career as a dancer before focusing on video opportunities in the dance community.
Recent projects include documenting Yvonne Rainer’s “The Concept of Dust” at MoMA; creating the video design for Yanira Castro’s “Court/Garden” at Danspace Project and River To River Festival at Federal Hall, NYC, ICA/Boston, and Redfern Performance Art Center, Keene State University, NH; video installations for Antonio Ramos’ “Mira El” at Center for Performance Research and American Realness/Abrons Art Center, a video installation for Patricia Hoffbauer’s “Dances for Intimate Spaces and Friendly People” at Gibney Dance Center, and a video translation of Periodic Solution, choreography by Jean Churchill, performance by Arthur Aviles, premiered at BAAD!, Ocotber 6, 2016.
Career highlights: touring the Glasnost-era Soviet Union as a dancer with Ballet Trockadero, touring as a the live-camera performer as a part of White Oak Project/Mikhail Baryshnikov’s “Past/Forward”, being a part of the creative team of Yanira Castro’s “Dark Horse/Black Forest” that was awarded a BESSIE (New York Dance and Performance Award) in 2009, and being the lead videographer at The Bates Dance Festival from 200 – 2014.
Currently, Peter is on the staff of The Chocolate Factory Theater as staff videographer.
